Dunning-Kruger Effect (Kruger & Dunning, 1999)
The Dunning-Kruger Effect shows that people with limited knowledge in a domain dramatically overestimate their competence in that domain. First-time founders consistently overvalue their companies because they do not know enough about valuation methodology to recognize how much they do not know. Meanwhile, experienced investors use established frameworks. The confidence gap between the two is where deals die — the founder feels insulted by a fair offer because their brain cannot see its own blind spots.
